In
2007, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), of which
Dr. Flisser is a Fellow, issued a Committee Opinion about these increasingly popular surgeries.
ACOG noted they are often marketed “as ways to enhance
appearance or sexual gratification.”
ACOG identified medically
indicated reasons for surgery, such as:
- treatment for labial hypertrophy or asymmetrical labial growth, and
- reversal or repair of female genital cutting
ACOG stated, “vaginal rejuvenation, designer
vaginoplasty, revirgination, and G-spot amplification...are not medically
indicated, and the safety and effectiveness of these procedures have not been
documented.”*
Dr.
Flisser agrees with ACOG’s position and believes that women who are seeking
vaginal or labial reconstructive procedures should have all the information
about
the risks, benefits, and alternatives to these surgeries.
Under certain circumstances, these surgeries
may be appropriate, but such procedures also carry risks: infection,
altered sensation, dyspareunia (pain with intercourse) adhesions, and scarring.
Be sure to choose a surgeon
who is
aware of these risks, and
who is honest and direct in informing you about them.
